The phenomenon

El Nino is an event that happens every two years or so. It develops because of winds above the Pacific Ocean. In typical years they blow east to west, but in El Nino years they weaken or sometimes even reverse entirely. The change in winds allows warm water to spread and release more heat. This can have a massive impact on global temperatures.

Forecasters are estimating this El Nino could be one of the biggest we’ve ever seen. In normal years water temperatures increase by 1-2 degrees Celsius. However, 2026 could be up to 4 degrees Celsius above the average. Some places could see double this.

Countries around the world are bracing for more extreme weather. This can include drier conditions leading to droughts and wildfires. Areas across Central America, South East Asia, and South America could all experience this. At the same time, other parts of the world including China, East Africa, and southern US could experience storms and flooding. It’s important to prepare for different conditions, including suitable clothing like waterproofs.

What about the UK?

Because of our geographical location, the UK does not typically feel the worst of El Nino weather conditions. However, there are warnings that this year could be different. So, we’re seeing recommendations to start planning ahead.

Crucially, forecasters are estimating we could see heavier rainfall starting in autumn. We’re also likely to have more storms, including strong winds. We could experience them by November. Significantly, the forecast is we could have bad weather until well into 2027.

The impact of more rain and strong winds could cause a lot of problems for the UK. Crucially, with areas still struggling with drought at the moment, a massive downpour means flooding is more likely. Strong wind could damage trees and power lines. All of this could lead to big disruptions in transport, impact food supplies and prices, and cause power cuts.
