The last few years have been really challenging for farmers all around the world because of issues with fertiliser. Last year was especially hard because of high prices. There have been shortages and supply problems at times too. Things do seem to be looking up though, with the average for 2024 and estimates for 2025 expecting them to be cheaper.
There is also good news for farmers in Northern England and Southern Scotland thanks to a new facility in the Port of Tyne. Let’s have a closer look.
A blending plant and warehouse
The facility is 6,000sq/m and will eventually offer a massive 18,000+ different blends of fertilisers. The warehouse will have the capacity for over 100,000 tonnes of product.
Port of Tyne is a really good location for the plant. It ensures there will be easy access to deep sea vessels from around the world. As a result, the operator Origin Soil Nutrition will be able to source raw materials from five continents. It will help to preserve the availability of products and can give a measure of protection with fertiliser prices too. The port is also one of the best cargo handling experts in the UK.
Benefits
The new facility will provide a number of benefits. Firstly, it will help the local economy by creating jobs in the region. It will also support the wider economy by helping farmers in England and Scotland. They’ll have easier, more stable access to fertilisers. As a result, they will be in a better position to meet the nutrition requirements of different crops.
There will be some environmental benefits too. The facility is modern and efficient. More crucially, the estimate is it will save up to 5,000 lorry loads every year. That will result in a big saving on fuel and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Port of Tyne and Origin Soil Nutrition were really happy with the opening of the £7.5m facility. It will help to support sustainable farming, helping communities and consumers.
