Wearing any kind of footwear that is too tight can be seriously uncomfortable. It can also lead to nerve and circulation problems, foot deformities, and various other conditions. The risk is higher if you wear them for a long time. Whether it is wellingtons, shoes, trainers, or other kinds of footwear, it’s important to ensure you have the right fit.
Wellies are one of the most difficult types of footwear to size effectively. The problem is there can be massive variations in the sizing between brands. While two may both claim to be the same size, they can be much different in reality. It all comes down to the materials and how they were made.
Do they stretch?
All kinds of footwear will stretch to some extent when you wear them. It helps them to adapt to your feet. However, some people ask if you can intentionally stretch rubber boots if they are too tight. There are a couple of different things you can try, but the results can vary.
The first thing to try is wearing your boots with thicker socks or multiple pairs. The idea is it can help to stretch them slightly to give your feet more room.
Another thing some people suggest is to gently heat your wellingtons. The aim is to make the rubber more pliable so it can stretch to suit your feet and calves.
Finally, some people suggest packing inside the wellies to make them stretch. There are a couple of suggestions of how to do this, including using newspaper or plastic bags of water and putting boots in the freezer so the water expands.
While there are lots of different hacks here, they may not actually work very well to stretch the boots. The problem is that most of them are vulcanised. That means they’re been treated to harden the rubber. Afterwards you’ll likely find that the material resists attempts to stretch it.
It’s also important to consider that attempting to stretch your boots could damage them. Plus, you risk injury if you’re trying to use a heat gun to warm and stretch the rubber.
What to do?
Generally the best thing to do if you want to avoid wellingtons being too tight is to ensure you get a clear idea of what size you need. Measure your feet and calves carefully. The latter is key, so make sure you are measuring the widest part.
Next, you must read the size guides for different brands. Don’t just assume that because they say a specific size that it is universal. There can be big differences. Check the size guide and compare to your measurements.
If you do have wide calves, consider investing in wider wellies. Preferably, you should go for adjustable ones that you can tighten or loosen to get a comfy fit.
