Also notable is the fact the Government has exceeded their targets recently. Close to 62,000 homes now have more protection against flooding. This is nearly 10,000 more than the target. It includes properties in various areas, such as 19,000+ in South-East England.

While the progress is positive, there are still lots of worries about vulnerable areas. The estimate is there are millions of properties that are at risk of flooding. This includes a number of homes and other buildings that pre-date the mandates for flood defences. It didn’t become a key planning requirement until 2001. Additionally, many homes date back to ages where flooding was not a concern in various areas. Home owners would not have even considered they would ever need wellingtons.

Climate change is also leading to serious problems. Flooding is becoming more frequent in many areas because of weather changes. There are three factors here. Periods of hotter weather, including droughts, can lead to floods when there is a sudden surge of rain. Longer cold periods, especially if there is snow, can lead to flooding. Finally, depressions and stormy weather with heavy rainfall is becoming more common.

Land use change can also have a big impact on flooding. Urbanisation is a problem, especially when it introduces a large volume of impermeable surfaces. Building on floodplains naturally runs the risk of flooding too. Plus, agriculture and different industrial operations can cause issues.
