Wellingtons

What to look for if you need wellingtons for different calf sizes

Getting a great fit is vital, particularly when you’re choosing wellingtons for tough jobs like farming. The last thing you want is for them to be too tight or too loose. It makes the boots uncomfortable to wear and can even lead to accidents, injuries, and other problems. One of the key things to look at if you’re getting tall boots is the fit around the calf. However, it can be tricky because calf sizes can vary massively. We want to have a closer look at this here so you know what to look for.

Sizes

Many standard boots are made to suit the average calf size. That’s the case with a large number of off the shelf products from different brands. The idea from the manufacturer is it means they will be suitable for a wide audience. Unfortunately though, it means they are often not good for people with narrower or wider calves.

If you want the right fit, you should always start off by measuring your calves. This will give you a clearer idea of the size you need. The best thing to do here is take a flexible measuring tape, sit on a chair with your feet flat to the floor, and measure around the widest part of each calf. Remember not to pull the tape tight; make sure it can slide up and down your calf.

Armed with a measurement of each calf, you can start looking for wellingtons that will work for you. Make sure you think about the other clothes you will wear too. Will you need extra space for thick socks or to tuck in jeans or work trousers?

Key features to look for

While a lot of boots are standard sizes, there are some adjustable ones on the market too. They can be fantastic for narrower and wider calves.

What you need to consider here is the gusset (or sometimes gussets). They are pieces of elastic material that can stretch. As a result, they provide more flexibility, make it easier to put boots on, and improve the fit. Some wellingtons have them on one side or at the back, near the top edge. Others have a gusset on each side to give you even more control over the fit. Have a close look to see how deep the gussets are; deeper ones are more accommodating.

You may also notice boots have straps and buckles or clips with the gussets. They are another great feature. You can use them to set the calf width. Make sure they are good quality though; the last thing you want is for clips to open when you’re moving around.
