The next UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) is scheduled for November 2025. It will once again bring countries around the world together to address climate risks and discuss progress since COP29. This year the event will take place in Brazil. It’s therefore fitting that we’ve just had news of the UK and Brazil’s historic fertiliser partnership.

A fantastic new relationship

The UK and Brazil will be collaborating to help make the production and use of fertilisers more sustainable. The aim is to overcome the environmental hurdles while also taking advantage of the economic opportunities.

Collaboration between two agricultural powerhouses will be really good for the industry. It will provide more support for research and development. More importantly, it will promote higher standards as well as best practice in both countries. Ultimately, it has the potential to make supply chains more resilient.

A crucial thing that every stakeholder should keep in mind is the impact of fertiliser. They contribute a massive 5% of global emissions. Much of this is from manufacturing them. However, shipping, overuse, and poor management are big contributors too. While their use offers many benefits, it is clear there is an urgent need to improve efficiency and sustainability.

One party signing the agreement was Ruth Davis, the UK’s Special Representative for Nature. She said “global cooperation is vital” for tackling the issues we are facing, including protecting soils, the environment, and food supply. Working with Brazil, “one of the world’s most bio-diverse nations”, the goal is to look at key things like managing nitrogen and building resilience.

On the Brazilian side, Deputy Agricultural Minister Cleber Oliveira Soares said collaborating with the UK showcases their continuing commitment to address “food security, resilient supply chains, and the climate”. Fellow Minister Marcel Moreira also said cooperating internationally on issues like sustainability “strengthens” the involvement of Brazil’s agribusiness in global markets.

What happens next?

It will be really interesting to see where the UK/Brazil partnership leads. The focus on innovation and sustainability is crucial with fertiliser. Hopefully, we can achieve a better balance between enjoying the benefits as well as managing and reducing the impact on the environment.

It’ll also be great to see what happens at COP30 later in the year. There are a number of key issues to explore at the conference, including climate plans, finance, adaptation, and the future of fossil fuel use.
