Animal feed

Bigger warning for UK livestock farmers

Earlier this month, ForFarmers gave a warning to organic dairy farmers in the UK that there is likely a tough period ahead. Feed shortages could become a major issue, especially if people fail to plan properly and act quickly. The Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) is now spreading the warning to all livestock farmers. They say the outlook for animal feed could be difficult into Q2 2026.

Latest report

AIC’s new UK Feed Market Outlook report says we may need to rely more on imports of raw feed materials in summer 2026. Currently, we produce 54% ourselves. The remaining 46% is imported from overseas, including maize, oats, and soya. However, we’re likely to need more imports to satisfy demand.

With a tricky outlook for the future, the AIC is warning UK livestock farmers to start planning as soon as possible. Crucially, they should look at any feeds they will need to order, potential price increases, and potential alternatives.

What is causing the issue?

A combination of factors means it’s a very tricky time for livestock farmers. The UK climate and environment is challenging in typical years, hence why we have to import tonnes of raw products for animal feed. It’s been even more difficult this year because of the dry summer, the hottest on record. It’s been a tough harvest season too, with crops like maize starting early and lower yields in many areas. There has been a higher risk of crop disease in many areas too.

The continuation of the war in Ukraine is also still leading to issues for farmers in various countries. They were one of the top producers of maize in the world. In typical years we got 27% of our imported maize from them. However, there has been a bigger reliance on alternative sources since 2022.

Another issue is uncertainty about trade policies and regulations. One of the most notable is the change to soya imports. New rules are incoming in the UK and Europe that will require buyers to purchase from deforestation and conversion free locations.

Plan ahead for animal feed

As you can see, things could get very tricky for livestock farmers in winter and spring. It’s important to act early to ensure that they will still be able to meet the nutritional goals for herds. It may even require a change to alternatives and supplements. Managing stocks and supplies carefully will be important too.
