Is there any other kind of footwear more versatile than wellingtons? They are a great choice for working, walking, festivals, and much more. You can rely on good quality boots to keep your feet dry and warm, even in the muddiest settings. It’s always quite sad when they start to wear out, especially when they are so comfortable. However, you may not need to throw them away; it’s possible to repair various problems to make them last longer. Let’s have a closer look at some of them.
Cracking or splitting
Easily the biggest problem with wellies is they can crack or split. Most boots are rubber, so over time the material can suffer oxidisation and become brittle. Issues can also occur due to poor storage, mechanical wear from pulling them off, and contact with different contaminants. Sadly, the wear can cause big problems, including letting water leak into the boots.
Luckily, there are a number of different products that can actually help to fix cracks and splits. Generally what you need to do is carefully clean and prepare the damaged area. You then apply the product, typically a spray or an adhesive and patches. Make sure you leave enough time for curing, especially with adhesives. Most importantly, choose a repair product that provides flexibility.
Heel wear
Some people notice the heels of their wellingtons wear out quite quickly. It generally happens because of how you walk and the surfaces you are walking on. Interestingly, though, you may actually be able to build them back up. Several layers of adhesive can do the trick. Just ensure you leave enough curing time for each layer.
Holes
Next we have another issue that can let water into your boots. Holes are a little trickier to repair than cracks or splits, but it is possible. What you need to do first is apply tape inside the boot over the hole. Then, use a repair product to fill it on the other side. Once it has cured, remove the tape and you’re all done. You may want to apply a patch outside as well for extra protection.
Sole damage
Did you know that the soles of wellies can actually detach from the uppers because of lack of use? A combination of heat and humidity from poor storage can do it too. Both issues happen because of hydrolysis and the materials breaking down. If you’re forcibly pulling off you boots by standing on the heel, that can cause separation too.
Luckily, it is possible to reattach the soles to the uppers with wellingtons and many other types of boots. What you need is a strong, suitable adhesive. Apply it where there is separation and squeeze together. A great idea is to put a weight inside the boot so there is constant force pushing the sole and upper together. When the adhesive is cured, the boots should be good as new.
General upkeep
If you want your boots to last as long as possible, you need to ensure you are looking after them. This includes regular cleaning, proper drying, and storing them properly. Avoid anything that will cause the materials to break down faster than normal. Most importantly, make sure you keep them away from heat sources; don’t put them near radiators, fires, stoves, or hot water pipes.
The best thing to do is regularly apply a boot care spray. It will help to keep the material supple and can enhance the weather resistance.
Quality wellingtons
Wellies are part of everyday life for many people, including farmers, construction workers, and hikers. It’s a good idea to choose quality boots that will protect your feet and last as long as possible. Be careful and consistent with upkeep too; it can help you avoid having to replace your boots every year.
