Do you have wellingtons that rub or feel too tight? If so, we have some advice to share. Wellies are a wonderful choice for anyone who spends most of their time outdoors. This is especially true with how the weather is here in the UK. However, they are not always the most comfortable footwear. Let’s go over how you can make yours nicer to wear.
Go up a size
To begin with, you should size up if you intend to wear thick socks. Wellies are typically worn during winter. This usually means thicker socks to keep your feet warm. If you’re wearing these, you’re best off sizing up for a more comforting fit. You should certainly do it if you intend to wear slipper or wellie socks. Both are on the thick side. Saying that, it’s worth noting that certain brands make their boots bigger than standard sizes. Before you buy, you should look at all the finer details.
Calf sizing
If there is anyone who has wide calves, then you should go for ankle high boots. Some people can only just fit their boots over their calves. They can struggle to get them off after a walk too. What you need to do if you find your standard wellies are too tight is to go for ankle or mid-calf designs. Ideal for dog walking, these can keep your feet dry without being uncomfortable on the calves. Nor will they be a problem to get on or off.
Break the boots in
Another thing you should do to make wellingtons comfortable is break them in. Brand new footwear commonly feels a bit stiff initially when you wear it. With enough time, they should mould to your feet and become more comfortable. Try wearing them for short amounts of time to start with. Additionally, you should attempt to bend them a few times before putting them on.
Use insoles
Investing in insoles is also a good suggestion. While on the practical side, wellies don’t always supply the greatest support. As such, you may want to invest in extra arch support if your wellies are too big or uncomfortable. If you’re after some extra warmth, you could get lambswool ones to keep your feet hot in winter.
Are they too big?
Lastly, it could simply be a case that your boots are too big. It can cause problems like cold feet, blisters, and rubbing. These can make them uncomfortable and also often leads to damage to the footwear as well. Plasters can act as a temporary solution to heal sore spots until your wellies are broken in. Should the rubbing persist though, you might need to buy thick boot socks to help reduce the problem.
