Whether you spend long hours working outside or enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, you’ll need the right clothing for the conditions. Waterproofs will be a good idea for many parts of the year in the UK. However, there’s nothing worse than putting on a waterproof jacket or trousers only to quickly find water is leaking in. It happens for a number of reasons, so let’s have a closer look to see what you can do to prevent it.
A crucial coating
Most waterproof garments will have a protective coating: a durable water repellent (DWR) layer. The treatment creates a thin layer on the fabric that prevents water from seeping through. It provides an additional level of protection, supporting the waterproof membrane.
The problem with the DWR is it doesn’t last forever. As it degrades, or if it suffers any kind of damage, the performance diminishes. Eventually, it won’t repel water effectively anymore, resulting in leaks.
There are a number of common issues that affect the DWR layer. Some of them are surprising, including contamination by sun cream and insect repellent. In fact, anything that can accumulate on the waterproofs can affect the waterproofing, from dirt to body oil and grime.
As we said, any kind of damage can have an impact on the DWR layer. Because it is so thin, it doesn’t take much to scratch through it. It can happen from things like backpack straps, seatbelts, and harnesses.
Washing
A lot of people make mistakes with their clothing when they wash it. The wrong washing method, settings, detergent, and drying method can all have an impact. Most importantly, there are harsh detergents that break down the DWR coating.
Seams
Finally, you may find that your waterproofs aren’t leaking because of the DWR. Instead, it could be due to issues with the seams. Quality waterproof garments have sealed seams for extra protection. However, like other clothing, over time they can experience mechanical wear and tear.
What to do?
Waterproof jackets, trousers, and even other products like tents and backpacks won’t last forever. They age gradually and can start to leak. This can happen faster if you don’t look after them properly. It also happens if you use them for tough jobs like farming and construction.
If you want to make products last longer, you need to take care of them. Ensure you don’t let dirt and other contaminants build up. If you need to wash them, do it gently and always follow manufacture guidelines. Minimise the chance of accidental abrasion too.
The single best thing you can do is re-apply a DWR layer. Depending on the type, you may be able to use a spray-on or wash-in coating. Make sure you choose a good quality product suitable for your garments.
Do you need to order waterproofs?
Waterproof jackets, trousers, boots, and various other products are essential for farming, construction, hiking, shooting, and more. They will ensure you are dry and comfortable. It’s best to think carefully about what to choose though, considering the materials and level of waterproofing.
