Farmers are notorious for suffering from foot problems. This includes fungal infections and even foot deformities. Wearing the right boots and socks is important if you want to improve foot health. At the same time, you should get into the habit of checking your wellingtons regularly. There is a really good reason for this, so read on to learn more.
Foot damage
Many farmers suffer foot deformities because they persist in wearing boots that are either too tight or too loose. It can lead to problems like bunions and hammer toes. These can be very painful, and may require surgery to correct. It’s best to check your footwear and make sure it fits correctly and comfortably.
As well as damage from the boots themselves, there is a big risk of damaging feet if there are things in your boots that shouldn’t be there. This includes stones, sand, seeds, or grains. They can easily find their way into boots, especially when you are walking around a yard or working in fields.
If you have rocks or other things in your wellingtons and ignore it, there could be serious problems. It could cause cuts, puncture wounds, and other damage. They can be very painful, and there is also a higher risk of infection. In the worst cases it could lead to massive problems where the only option is amputation.
What to do?
As we said, the best thing to do is get into the habit of checking boots before you wear them. Tip them upside down and make sure there are no rocks or other things inside. You may also need to reach in and feel around to make sure there is nothing stuck in the insoles or materials. Check the bottom for holes or cracks too.
Another good thing to do is take steps to prevent anything from getting into your wellingtons while you are wearing them. Sealing the top is a good idea if possible. Gaiters are also a great choice.
Crucially, if you feel anything cutting, stabbing, or pressing into your foot, don’t ignore it. Stop, remove your boot, and get rid of it. This is much better than risking damaging your foot.
Think about how you store your boots too. Don’t leave them anywhere that could allow things to drop or roll in. Ideally, keep them upright in a boot room. Additionally, make sure children or pets aren’t playing near them and hiding things inside.
