One of the most exciting things about being a child is all the fun and cool toys to play with. Yet, some children have difficulties playing appropriately. They can be unsafe and rough. As a result, parents sometimes struggle to get their kids to play in the right ways. To help you with managing playtime better, we’re going to discuss strategies you can use. These will help keep your child and others safe, and can get the most from farm toys and more.
Model
Firstly, when your kid receives a new toy, model to them how they should use it. You need to offer lots of prompts. Use hand-over-hand assistance too. This will allow you to encourage and teach your child to play with the new toy correctly.
Practice
After modelling, have your child practice suitably playing with a new toy. If they become a bit too rough with everything, show them the right way to use their toys. Afterwards, have them repeat this back to you.
Praise
When your kid is playing with their toys suitably, give them praise. Let them know they’re doing a wonderful job. For instance, you can say you love how they are playing with their dolls. Or, say they are doing an excellent job not throwing their tractor around. If you’d like to buy our farm toys, please let us know.
Take them away
In the event your children aren’t playing with the toys properly, you should take them away. This can include trying to break the toys, hitting others with them, and throwing things around. If they do any of these, take the toys.
Most importantly, let your kids know what they are doing wrong. Talk to them about why it’s not safe. For instance, someone could get hurt, or they could break the toys or something else. Others may not want to play with them if they are acting unsuitably. You can then reintroduce the toy and tell your child how to play with it. Let them know that if they don’t play with toys properly, you’ll take them away for the rest of the day.
Create a story
Another thing you can do here is make up a story. It can show them how they should and shouldn’t play with things, including farm toys. Within this story, make note of the suitable ways to play and why you need to play with them that way. Furthermore, your story can illustrate unsuitable behaviour. Highlight why you can’t play with toys this way. Review the story with your kid before they start playing or hang out with friends. Moreover, you and your kid can reread the story should they misbehave with a toy.
Make sure they are ready
Lastly, keep in mind your child may simply not be ready. Some kids might not be at the stage developmentally to play with certain toys. This is despite the age restrictions from the manufacturer. In this scenario, bring the toy out every so often to see if your child is at the right stage. The toy will be a lot more fun for the pair of you when they use it correctly.
