Wellingtons

Avoiding sweaty feet in wellies this summer

One of the main goals with wellingtons is to keep your feet dry. However, the quality materials that prevent water from getting in can actually trap sweat too. It can be very uncomfortable, especially if you have to wear the boots for long periods. Luckily, there are a few different things you can try to avoid issues. They can help keep your feet dry and healthy.

The value of good wellies

The first thing you need to look at is the boots themselves. Did you know that a bad fit can actually make your feet sweat more? You also have a higher chance of chafing and blisters if they are too loose and rub your feet. What you need to do is ensure you choose quality footwear that fits properly. Ensure it allows good airflow and circulation.

The right socks

A big reason sweaty feet are uncomfortable is you get damp socks. It feels awful and can lead to all kinds of problems, including bad smells, rashes, and infections. Choosing the right socks when you are wearing boots is really important. The best choice is materials that are breathable, absorbent, and able to wick moisture away. In summer, avoid thick socks. Plus, make sure they fit properly, avoiding tight fitting socks.

Great products

There are a couple of different things you can use to help tackle sweaty feet in wellingtons. Spraying antiperspirant can be really useful. It blocks sweat glands, so just like underarms, it can keep you dry.

Another option is to use foot powder. It can absorb all the moisture and deodorise at the same time. There are even powders that provide protection against bacteria. If you’re wearing boots for work or long walks in summer, it is a great choice. It works especially well when you’re wearing thinner socks too.

Insoles

It is also a good idea to check the insoles in your boots. They can actually make feet sweat, especially if they don’t provide enough support and allow feet to rub. If you only have basic insoles, it is wise to invest in better ones, prioritising supportive cushioning and ventilation. Absorbent ones are best.

Is it plantar hyperhidrosis?

Some people struggle with sweaty feet all year round, including in warm summers and cold winters. They can have the issue no matter what footwear it is, from wellingtons to thin plimsolls.

The important thing to do here is to check to see if it is plantar hyperhidrosis. If so, it could be genetic or a side effect of a medical condition. It could even be happening because of stress and anxiety. It is vital to get this checked to then get suitable treatment. In some cases, creams and stronger prescription antiperspirants can be a big help. Some people may require a treatment known as iontophoresis.
