Farming in the UK means there is always a chance you will get caught in the rain while working outside. So, it is a good idea to have protective clothing ready for light showers or heavy downpours. Waterproofs come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, whether it is jackets or waterproof trousers. You should take the time to ensure you have the right ones for different conditions.
What we want to do today is look specifically at waterproof trousers. We’ll discuss the different types, features, and things to look out for.
Fabric
Firstly, always have a look at the fabrics. Some products will be light and don’t have a super durable facing fabric. They are best for emergency use when there are light showers. They likely won’t be strong enough for heavy duty work.
If you need to be able to keep working hard in very heavy rain or worse conditions, you will want waterproofs with a denser facing fabric. It will offer more protection against the elements. Plus, you get more durability to ensure they can withstand the hardest jobs without worrying about rips or tears.
Seams
Every good waterproof garment, whether it is trousers or jackets, should have sealed or taped seams. The idea is they prevent water from getting in through tiny stitch holes. Don’t bother with any products that don’t have this kind of seams; you’ll end up wet.
Waist
Next, you need to look at the waists. There can be a fair few different options for waistbands on trousers. The most common will be elastic to make it easy to get them on and off, often over the top of whatever you are already wearing. Some will have toggles so you can pull them tight.
Farmers in particular might want to consider waterproofs with a bib and braces. They help to ensure the trousers stay up. That can be essential for comfort and safety. It also makes it better if you are wearing hip belts or other things.
Zips
Some waterproof trousers are very simple and don’t have any additional features. However, others can have several zips for comfort, convenience, and extra support. For example, there may be zips up the sides to help you get them on easily without having to remove boots. Sometimes you can get a zip that goes all the way up to offer ventilation. It can be very useful if it is warm but rainy.
Fit
One of the most important things with any waterproof clothing is to get a good fit. With trousers you want them to be a little bit bigger than usual so you can wear them over the top of other clothes. However, you don’t want them to be too baggy; it can be dangerous, especially with farming, if you have too much excess fabric.
Do they pack away?
Finally, decide what you need in terms of being able to pack the trousers. There are some light ones that can pack away into a surprisingly small ball. They are best for emergency light rain and can easily fit in a bag or vehicle. Heavier, more durable products aren’t packable. If you’re planning to wear them all day in winter though, that won’t be a problem.
Choose the right waterproofs
If you work in farming, it is probably a good idea to have a selection of waterproof garments for different conditions. Get a lighter jacket and trousers for warmer months when there could still be light rain. Then, have a more durable jacket and trousers for the wettest days and winter.
