Whatever type of farming you do, it’s likely you’ll have plenty of tough jobs to get on with. You will need the right workwear to protect you. The key thing here is you need protection from the weather, mud and muck, and various other contaminants and hazards. So, you’ll need waterproofs and rugged clothing, footwear, and accessories.
What we want to do here is look at the main pieces of workwear you’ll need for farming. So, keep reading for top tips.
Shirts
Tough, rugged shirts are a must for farmers. Standard t-shirts typically won’t be up to the job. They won’t provide protection and can restrict movement. Work shirts should ensure you can move freely, ensure breathability so you don’t get sweaty and uncomfortable, and provide cover when you need it. Long sleeves you can easily roll up if necessary are a good idea. Even more importantly, ensure you choose shirts that are easy to wash. Flannel and cotton blends are a great choice.
Trousers or overalls?
Protecting your legs is just as important as arms and your torso. Some people favour overalls for farming because they can provide move coverage. Waterproof ones are great if you work outside. They also have an added benefit as you won’t need to worry about wearing a belt. The only downside is they may restrict movement in some cases.
If you find overalls too restrictive, get too hot wearing them, or prefer not to wear them, you can choose high quality trousers. Denim jeans are still really popular for farming because they are rugged and can last a long time. Work trousers and waterproofs are a great option too. Make sure whatever you choose will allow you to move, including squatting and climbing.
Jackets
Everybody knows that in the UK you’ll need a jacket for the majority of the year. We can get rain at any time, even in the middle of summer. So, farmers will need to have one handy at all times.
The wise thing here is to ensure you have a couple of different jackets to suit the seasons. A light pakka jacket is ideal for any warm periods where there may be light showers. Then, a two or three layer waterproof jacket will be best for wetter periods. The layers will help keep you warm and dry.
Accessories
Like any other job, you’ll likely need a number of different accessories for farming. A good hat is a must to give you protection from the sun and rain. There may be cases where you need a hard hat. Gloves are important too, especially if you’re handling anything dangerous. Finally, you may need hearing protection and safety eyewear at times too.
Footwear
The last thing to think about is footwear. There are many options to choose from here. Generally the choice will come down to wellies, safety shoes, or boots. Ensure whatever you choose will give you the right amount of support and enough grip. Plus, ensure your feet will be dry and comfortable.
