In the agricultural field, it’s essential that you stay dry. After all, these environments are often damp and muddy. Somewhere else where this is important is with children. The weather isn’t the most favourable in the UK. As a result, you’ll want to ensure your kids are well equipped, especially if they are helping with farm work. With that in mind, we’re going to discuss the most essential features with children’s waterproofs.
Is it actually waterproof?
Firstly, you need to make sure the garments are actually waterproof. This might sound obvious, but many products don’t do the greatest job at keeping us dry. For kids, you don’t often technically need breathable fabric. All you need is 100% waterproof. A polyurethane coated fabric works wonders. This comes with a slightly rubbery feel. It doesn’t need surface treatment, so it isn’t difficult to care for either.
Is it durable?
Secondly, you need durability. Kitting out kids head to toe in waterproof clothing is an investment. As such, they need to last. The wear and tear children’s clothing suffers can be considerable. Avoid buying too cheap as you’ll get what you pay for. You need a fabric capable of withstanding going down slides, sliding down muddy banks, and sitting in puddles. A decent quality PU waterproof fabric will usually work, but be careful.
Does it have good seams?
For clothing to actually be waterproof, the seams must be sealed. There are a couple of ways to do this; you either tape the seams or weld them together. Most adult clothing comes with the former. Taping seams works well with high end clothes. But with cheaper clothing, it can peel with ease. When bulk buying children’s waterproofs, you may have to avoid taped seams and seek out welded seams. They are far more durable and don’t need as much maintenance.
Is it the right size?
Sizing is also vital. Waterproof garments for kids tend to be generous. As such, you shouldn’t go buying sizes they’ll “grow into”.
Is it easy to look after?
You need to care for the clothing too. The key to success here is having products that don’t need much looking after. A hose down and sponge wipe will suffice with quality waterproofs. Remember, they are meant for use, not to look pristine, so don’t worry about deep cleaning.
Does it have pockets?
With kids, one thing you likely don’t want is pockets. Initially, they might appear to be a good idea. Yet, when you buy clothes for children, they become hiding spots for all kinds of rotten things; just avoid them.
Is it easy to put on and take off?
See to it that the waterproofs are easy to get on as well. This will be a big help if you are in a hurry or if there is a sudden downpour. Enabling children to be able to get their garments off independently will also make things easier. Look for simple designs without a lot of fussy accessories and zips.
Is it repairable?
These waterproof goods also need to be repairable. If you want the most out of them, it’s worth getting hold of some repair kits.
