Waterproofs

Always prepare for the worst in summer

Many people can’t wait for summer to arrive so they can put shorts and sunglasses on and get outside. With rain being so common throughout the year, we want to make the most of the sunny days we get. But, it can get uncomfortable if you are caught outside and the weather takes a turn for the worst. So, whether you are working outside or enjoying an activity, it can be a good idea to prepare for the worst and have some waterproofs with you.

A jacket

The most important thing here is to ensure you have a suitable waterproof jacket. Getting wet can be very uncomfortable, especially if you can’t get dry quickly. It has a bigger impact on your body when it is your head and torso; you’ll lose more heat and it can lead to health problems.

Ideally what you want is a light waterproof jacket. Generally it is still quite warm in the summer, even in the rain. So, you don’t need a thick coat to keep you warm. It can actually by more dangerous to wear one because you will sweat more. Simple lightweight jackets that will keep the water off are ideal. Even better, you can choose ones that are easy to ball up and store away. In some cases a simple rain poncho will be sufficient.

Trousers

As we said, many people rush to wear shorts in summer instead of long trousers, jeans, or skirts. They want to be more comfortable in the heat. However, it means the legs are exposed if it rains. Luckily though, while it can be uncomfortable, it is not immediately hazardous to have wet legs. As a result, you may not need to worry about waterproofs.

There are some things to think about here though. For one, is there a chance it will rain for a long time and you will be outside in it? If so, it can be wise to have some lightweight waterproof trousers you can easily put on over shorts. Think about your footwear too. Will the rain get in your boots or shoes? If so, light over-trousers can be great for ensuring your feet will remain dry.

What are you doing?

The most important thing to think about is what you will be doing outside. If you are working, it can be better to have light waterproof clothing to hand in summer. It will ensure you can keep doing the job even if there is rain. Just make sure it won’t be too loose and become a hazard.

If you are walking or hiking, you need to strike a balance. You won’t want to carry things you won’t desperately need as it can make your pack excessively heavy. A light jacket can be enough here.
