Waterproofs

Be careful in the sun

Dealing with the weather in the UK means you usually need to plan for anything. Conditions can change quickly, leaving you running to grab a jacket because the bright sun has suddenly become dark clouds and rain. But what does that mean when it comes to waterproofs? You need to think about the level of wear and tear in different conditions. We want to look at that today.

Fabrics and UV

A crucial thing to keep in mind is that bright sun and excessive UV can have a surprising impact on various fabrics. It can cause them to fade and break down. You can see this with things like tents, boat covers, and even fabric signs or banners. It happens more easily with natural fibres.

Nylon is a popular material for making various outdoor products, including bags, tarps, pet gear, and even things like washing lines. It is a durable material, but is only somewhat UV resistant. So, you need to be careful with any goods that are made from it, including garments.

Polyester can be a really excellent choice for waterproofs, tents, awnings, and more. However, you need to keep in mind that there are various different types with differing levels of UV protection. Typically what you want is solution-dyed for excellent sun resistance. Some polyesters have a vinyl backing too for further protection, but you need to make sure you care for it to get the best results.

What you need to do is ensure you choose garments that will protect you but not break down when it is sunny. That way you have protection when you need it while not having to worry about needing to replace them regularly.

The weave

It is also important to think about the weave. This has a number of impacts, including effecting how much UV can penetrate the fabric and the level of breathability.

Tighter, denser weaves can offer more protection from the sun because they block the rays. You can see this with classic waterproofs like polyester. They are less breathable though, so it can be uncomfortable to wear them when it is too hot; they can trap sweat.

Lighter, thinner weaves are the opposite and allow more light to pass through. But, they are more breathable. So, they can help you to stay cooler but won’t offer as much protection.

Be careful when choosing waterproofs

The focus when you buy any clothing to protect you from the rain is to ensure you stay as dry as possible. However, it is also worth thinking about the impact of the sun. This way you can choose products that will work for all conditions.
