Waterproofs

Will waterproofs keep you warm?

We’ve all likely had that moment when we have been out and the weather has suddenly gotten colder. It can make you feel incredibly uncomfortable until you can get inside and warm up again. Besides the discomfort though, it can actually be dangerous. This is especially true if you get cold and it affects your movement. The best thing to do is ensure you have the right clothes to protect you. In some cases this can include good quality waterproofs.

Two issues

Generally we get cold for one of two reasons. Firstly, it might rain. It can make your clothes damp or soak you to the bone. If that happens, it can lower your body temperature and you will feel the cold.

Secondly, you need to think about the wind chill. In many cases if there was no wind it would easily be much warmer. However, windy days can quickly get very cold.

Will waterproofs help?

As the name says, a waterproof garment could offer fantastic protection against the rain. There are materials that can withstand even the heaviest downpours. They won’t allow any water to get past to your clothes or skin underneath.

Sadly, waterproofs might not be as effective against the wind. It all depends on the material and design of the garment. Creating a barrier against moisture is not the same as offering one that can stop cold gusts. Generally you need densely woven fabric to tackle it. You need to think about this to ensure you choose suitable clothing.

It is also important to think about sweat. Sweating is a crucial bodily function that helps to cool us down when it is hot or when we do strenuous activities. However, sweating when it is cold can be very unpleasant. So, you need to avoid garments that will lock sweat in. The best thing to do is to choose materials that are waterproof but breathable. This way, large water droplets won’t penetrate them while smaller sweat vapours can escape.

Order reliable garments

If you want to ensure you are warm while you are outside working or doing any kind of activity, you need to think carefully about your clothing. If it will be really windy, choose windproof garments. On the other hand, if it is raining heavily or forecast to last all day, prioritise waterproof ones. Layering can be good to help you stay warm and dry, but make sure you won’t sweat and end up cold and uncomfortable.
